Side affects of eating disorders

Some of the common side affects a sufferer of an eating disorder experiences:

  • Chronic fatigue (often exhaustion)
  • Poor digestion and metabolism
  • Automatic reflux
  • Severe constipation
  • Cold intolerance (freezing hands and feet, yet severe perspiring)
  • Abnormal colon functioning – often resulting in irritable bowel symptom (a spastic colon)
  • High cholesterol
  • Weak thyroid
  • Abnormal food cravings e.g. sugar; salty; sour
  • Orthostatic decrease in blood pressure resulting in light headedness/feeling feint
  • Reduction of dopamine (a neurotransmitter and chemical in the brain which  impacts hugely on one’s impulsiveness and addictive personality traits)
  • Depression/anxiety/bio-polar tendencies
  • Kidney infections (I did for several years)
  • Poor circulation (water re-tension)
  • Bloated stomach
  • Dry/brittle hair with split ends (looks like rat’s tails)
  • Osteoporosis
  • Ruptured/broken oesophagus
  • Abdominal pains
  • Irregular heart rhythms
  • De-hydrated skin (pre-maturing aging)
  • Dental cavities (erosion of tooth enamel, resulting in possible tooth loss)
  • Swelling of the salivary glands in the facial area
  • Absence of one’s monthly menstrual cycle
  • Temporary/permanent infertility
  • Low self-worth and confidence – I continue thriving to develop them both
  • Unrealistic personal body image  - an issue I battle daily to overcome
  • Emotionally crippled (emotions and feelings are completely foreign to the sufferer)

The side affects which I have highlighted in the above list, are ones which I to this very day, many years into recovery, experience on a regular basis.

WEIGHT GAIN IS A SURPRISING OUTCOME AND THE OPPOSITE OF WHAT BULIMICS ARE TRYING TO ACHIEVE AND IT IS OFTEN THE RESULT CAUSED BY THE VERY HIGH CALORIFIC INTAKE AS A CONSEQUENCE OF BINGING.

People will forget what you said. People will forget what you did. But they will never forget how you made them feel.

When you have to make a difficult decision, flip a coin. Why? Because when that coin is in the air.....you suddenly know what you’re hoping for.

May the world hug you with warmth, love and peace during this time. May it whisper words of courage, may the wind carry a voice that tells you not to worry. As God continues to watch over you always.

LOVE is the medicine for the sickness of mankind. We can live if we have love. LOVE never fails.
